I’m Back?

So shortly after the last post, I basically stopped practicing the guitar. No reason, I just for some reason, spent a lot of time watching Netflix. Then two months ago, my house got burglarized and they stole my Xbox and PS3. No more Netflix, video games, or electronic distractions. First of all, I had no reason to stop playing, I just did. I thought about getting another Xbox, but didn’t really want to spend the money on it. Boredom, led me to pick up the guitar and try to play some of the things I had been practicing earlier.

I quickly realized I was basically starting from scratch again. Other than the G and Em none of the other chords were working for me. I was basically transitioning at a snails pace and had to look at my fingers. I spent a good month just practicing cowboy chords trying to pick up transition speed and clarity. A weird thing happened, I started playing 4-5 hours a day after work. I feel I have improved quickly. Two months later and I am working on E shaped and Am shaped barre chords. I can play them without looking and am working on improving my speed. I’m working on scales and have learned a couple of complete songs and a lot of partial songs. I am really having a blast.

All because my house got robbed.

Friday Update

I have practiced every night this week. I’m still just plucking at chords though. I need some type of regiment. There are so many things to practice though, its kind of hard to just settle on a few. The chords are coming along beautifully though. Calluses really help!

My baby nephew has the guitar bug as well I think. My brother-in-law has an acoustic and every time I go over to his house, my nephew just plucks at the strings. I swear I think I hear a song emerging from his plucking. He’s not even 2 yet. He might end up like that kid from August Rush :)

Tiny Progress

So I am truely still a beginner. Even though I purchased my guitar near 2 years ago, I really can’t say I have been playing for more than a month. Its collected a lot of dust. I remember during my first weeks of practice, I could transition from C to G7. Slowly, but I could. Flash forward a year and a half with no practice and I wondered if I really could ever hold a C at all. Well it seems its coming back. I can now play a C without accidentally dampening or buzzing any strings. Tiny bits of progress does wonders to my motivation.

Good Progress

Well I have a few Guitar Method books. I have the berkley book, and a couple of mel bay books. The mel bay books seem to start of simpler so I figure i’ll go through those first. I worked through the first 4 pages of one of the mel bay books. The exercises are pretty easy and in standard music notation. I’m just learning where the notes are on the guitar.

Practice Today

Spent a lot of time on warmups using a metronome, chords are coming along. I had less hand pain today. Barre-ing the A Chord is much easier for me than bunching my three fingers in the small space. Decided to concentrate on a small subset of chords for now rather than practice 16 or so. Found this interesting article on top 10 mistakes when learning chords.
